I Believe. This page is a statement of belief, a mission statement if you will, which should declare foundations and intentions. One of the first great statements, exhortations really, was from Paul the Apostle in his letter to the Philippians a gentile church in Macedonia about 60 AD. I quote it because I was looking for a creed to state what I believe rather than tell you about me:
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
--Philippians 2:5-11
On this site, all quotations are from the New Revised Standard Version.
About a hundred yeas later, the early church distilled their mission statement into what has become known as The Apostles’ Creed, to which I also ascribe:
“I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth;
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.”
No creed can or should substitute for that which has been recorded in the word of God. Therefore, search the scriptures along with the ancient Bereans to test whether these things are so. I believe God will prove himself worthy of scrutiny. Test him.
